Nvidia has announced a slew of AI-focused enterprise products at its annual GTC conference. They include details of its new silicon architecture, Hopper; the first datacenter GPU built using that architecture, the H100; a new Grace CPU "superchip"; and vague plans to build what the company claims will be the world's fastest AI supercomputer, named Eos. Nvidia has benefited hugely from the AI boom of the last decade, with its GPUs proving a perfect match for popular, data-intensive deep learning methods. As the AI sector's demand for data compute grows, says Nvidia, it wants to provide more firepower. In particular, the company stressed the popularity of a type of machine learning system known as a Transformer.

Fresh off its rebrand last October, Meta (née Facebook) is putting muscle behind its vision of a metaversal future with a massive new AI supercomputer called the AI Research SuperCluster (RSC). Meta says that RSC will be used to help build new AI models, develop augmented reality tools, seamlessly analyze multimedia data and more. The supercomputer's first phase is already operational, and it is scheduled for full build-out by mid-year. HPCwire is estimating that the final system will weigh in at over 220 Linpack petaflops. For storage, the system is equipped with 175PB of Pure Storage FlashArray, 10PB of Pure Storage FlashBlade and 46PB of cache storage housed in Penguin Computing Altus servers.

Social media conglomerate Meta is the latest tech company to build an "AI supercomputer" -- a high-speed computer designed specifically to train machine learning systems. The company says its new AI Research SuperCluster, or RSC, is already among the fastest machines of its type and, when complete in mid-2022, will be the world's fastest. "Meta has developed what we believe is the world's fastest AI supercomputer," said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a statement. "We're calling it RSC for AI Research SuperCluster and it'll be complete later this year." The news demonstrates the absolute centrality of AI research to companies like Meta.

Meta has completed the first phase of a new AI supercomputer. Once the AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) is fully built out later this year, the company believes it will be the fastest AI supercomputer on the planet, capable of "performing at nearly 5 exaflops of mixed precision compute." The company says RSC will help researchers develop better AI models that can learn from trillions of examples. Among other things, the models will be able to build better augmented reality tools and "seamlessly analyze text, images and video together," according to Meta. Much of this work is in service of its vision for the metaverse, in which it says AI-powered apps and products will have a key role. "We hope RSC will help us build entirely new AI systems that can, for example, power real-time voice translations to large groups of people, each speaking a different language, so they can seamlessly collaborate on a research project or play an AR game together," technical program manager Kevin Lee and software engineer Shubho Sengupta wrote in a blog post.
NVIDIA Launches UK's Fastest AI Supercomputer for Healthcare Research
He said the system will enable research breakthroughs at a scale and speed previously impossible with global impact potentially benefiting millions. Its first projects with AstraZeneca, GSK, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, King's College London and Oxford Nanopore Technologies include developing a deeper understanding of brain diseases like dementia, using AI to design new drugs and improving the accuracy of finding disease-causing variations in human genomes. Cambridge-1 is the first NVIDIA supercomputer designed and built for external research access. The company will collaborate with researchers to make much of this work available to the greater scientific community. The system is located at a facility operated by NVIDIA partner Kao Data. Cambridge-1 is the first supercomputer NVIDIA has dedicated to advancing industry-specific research in the U.K. The company also intends to build an AI Center for Excellence in Cambridge featuring a new Arm-based supercomputer, which will support more industries across the country.

Researchers have switched on the world's fastest AI supercomputer, delivering nearly four exaFLOPS of AI performance for more than 7,000 researchers. Perlmutter, officially dedicated today at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Centre (NERSC), is a supercomputer that will help piece together a 3D map of the universe, probe subatomic interactions for green energy sources, and much more. The supercomputer is made up of 6,159 NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs, which makes it the largest A100-powered system in the world. Over two dozen applications are getting ready to be among the first to use the system based at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. In one project, the supercomputer will help assemble the largest 3D map of the visible universe to date.

Nvidia and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) on Thursday flipped the "on" switch for Perlmutter, billed as the world's fastest supercomputer for AI workloads. Named for astrophysicist Saul Perlmutter, the new supercomputer boasts 6,144 NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs and will be tasked with stitching together the largest ever 3D map of the visible universe, among other projects. Perlmutter is "the fastest system on the planet" at processing workloads with the 16-bit and 32-bit mixed-precision math used in artificial intelligence (AI) applications, said Nvidia global HPC/AI product marketing lead Dion Harris during a press briefing earlier this week. Later this year, a second phase will add even more AI supercomputing power to Perlmutter, which is housed at NERSC at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. "In one project, the supercomputer will help assemble the largest 3D map of the visible universe to date. It will process data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a kind of cosmic camera that can capture as many as 5,000 galaxies in a single exposure," Harris wrote in a blog post announcing the news.

Switzerland constructs the world's fastest AI supercomputer
Tokyo (SCCIJ) – Switzerland is building the world's most powerful supercomputer focused on artificial intelligence. The "Alps" system is designed for researchers and will come online 2023 as scheduled despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS) is partnering with Hewlett Packard and Nvidia to combine classic supercomputing and AI technologies for superior performance. Switzerland's new supercomputer increases the speed of data processing for AI applications significantly ( CSCS). The new data center will replace CSCS's existing Piz Daint supercomputer and serve as a general-purpose system open to the broad community of researchers in Switzerland and the rest of the world.
